Understanding fraternal relations

What is a Masonic treaty?

A Masonic treaty is a formal agreement between Masonic governing bodies, often Grand Lodges, that sets out the relationship they agree to maintain. Sometimes called a treaty of amity or friendship, it can express mutual respect, establish recognition, and define how the participating bodies and their members may work together. Its meaning depends on the actual terms and the rules of each participating body.

Amity

Amity means friendship and peaceful fraternal relations. An agreement may express shared commitments to brotherhood, relief, and the pursuit of truth.

Recognition

Recognition is a decision by a Grand Lodge to accept another Masonic body under its own standards. Friendship, recognition, and permission to visit can have different requirements.

Visitation

Where authorized, an agreement may allow members to visit one another’s Lodges. Members should confirm permission, standing, and admission requirements through their own Lodge and Grand Lodge before visiting.

Independence

Fraternal relations can exist while each Grand Lodge retains its own government, traditions, and authority. A treaty’s scope is determined by the participating bodies; it does not establish recognition by every other Grand Lodge.

For a local Lodge, a treaty may provide a framework for approved fellowship and exchange with Lodges under another jurisdiction. Members remain subject to their own Grand Lodge’s constitution, regulations, and directions.
